The Supreme Court, on Monday, approved the ex-gratia (meaning - by favor) policy of Rs 50,000 to families of people who died of Covid-19 in India.

A bench, headed by Justice M.R. Shah, said no state government should deny the Rs 50,000 benefit on the ground that the cause of death on the death certificate is not Covid-19 and the district authorities should take remedial steps to have the cause of death corrected.

Supreme Court said that National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will disburse the amount within 30 days of demise for those who succumbed due to covid-19, while asking the Centre and states to give wide publicity to the scheme.
