Key Laws in the IPC Every Citizen Must Be Aware Of

There are many laws in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that every citizen should be aware of. However, some of the most important laws that everyone should know include:

  • Section 302: Murder: Whoever commits the murder shall be punished with death, or shall be punished with imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine.
  • Section 323: Voluntarily causing hurt: Whoever, voluntarily causes hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment for up to one year, or with fine of up to ₹1,000, or with both.
  • Section 325: Voluntarily causing grievous hurt: Whoever, voluntarily causes grievous hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years, or with fine of up to ₹5,000, or with both.
  • Section 354: Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty: Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
  • Section 379: Theft: Whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with fine of up to ₹2,000, or with both.
  • Section 406: Criminal breach of trust: Whoever commits criminal breach of trust shall be punished with imprisonment for up to three years, or with fine of up to ₹2,000, or with both.
  • Section 420: Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property: Whoever cheats and thereby dishonestly induces the person deceived to deliver any property to any person, or to consent that any person shall retain any property, or intentionally induces the person deceived to do or omit to do anything which he would not do or omit if he were not deceived, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.
  • Section 499: Defamation: Whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
